Yesterday we looked at how you will plan for your life using Vision and Mission statements. We looked at the case of Johnson who qualified as an international accountant after carefully carving a vision and mission statements for his chosen profession.
Today we shall look at how to strategically manage your life in order to achieve your desired feats. Without strategy, your mission and vision are useless. You shall remain at the dream stage for the rest of your life. Many of us are still at the dream stage of our life; nothing get realized, nothing achieved just because we do not have any strategy.
But what is strategy?
Strategy has been defined by the book writers as “a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim”. Another definition is “the art of planning and directing overall military operations and movements in a war or battle”. The definitions here are already speaking for themselves. A plan of action….! This means it is not sufficient to have the vision and mission statement but a plan must be in place and this plan must be an action one; not passive.
You might have desired to be the best student. That is the vision. And you might be desiring to pass your exams with flying colors. That is the mission statement. What does it take to get there? Get your books, study two hours at dawn and two hours in the evening. That is your strategy! If you are not studying as planned, you might not achieve the desired mission (passing with flying colors) and therefore you cannot even be the best student (vision).
Let’s take a look at this military strategy of Joshua in leading attack against the city with the smallest name in the Bible – Ai.
So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night with these orders: “Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them, you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand. When you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the Lord has commanded. See to it; you have my orders.” (Joshua 8:3-8).
Take note that nothing in this world is achieved without a strategy. The Prophet can prophesy to you, or the Mallam can give you all the enchantments but if you do not strategize, you shall still fail. And with this you go back and blame the Prophet or the Mallam for deceiving you!
